Spring ’19 Game Jam Entries and May 2019 Online Meeting Announcement

Knoxville Game Design invites you to attend the online meeting and show recording for Sunday May 12, 2019 at 2pm Eastern Time.

This month we will show off and discuss the games created by Knoxville developers for Spring ’19.  Let us know if we missed yours and we will add it to the list.

Primordial by Jacob

An army of pre-human dwarves must survive an oncoming of fallen dwarves, dwarves revived by a vengeful Necromancer. You must build up your defenses and survive both his scouter fallen, and the villain himself. Build defenses , mine minerals, and survive against packs of vengeful cadavers.

Yen Master by Levi

Vanquish the demons to become the one true Yen Master! Collect yen to buy powerups, but be careful because the game is over once your yen goes down to zero. Enemy demons and their projectiles will drain your yen.

Time lapse Videos

Any game development questions are welcome.  We will have “show and tell” time for any other game projects.

Spring ’19 Game Jam Kickoff

This is just a reminder that the Knoxville Game Design kickoff meeting for Spring ’19 is Friday April 26, 2019 at Panera Bread on North Peters Rd.  We will be there starting around 7:00pm, but feel free to join us at any time.  The theme announcement is at 9:00pm, and we will end after discussing the theme.  Participation in the game jam is not necessary to attend our kickoff, if you just want to come out and meet us and talk about game design.

The following game jam is currently scheduled for October 2019, so we probably won’t have another in-person meeting for about six months.  We will continue to have the online hangouts every second Sunday of the month at 2pm Eastern Time.  The topic for the May 2019 meeting will be showing off our Spring ’19 games (and any other recently developed games).

Music for Game Developers – Knox Game Design, April 2019

Math for Game Developers – Knox Game Design, March 2019

This month Levi D. Smith covers math for game developers. He explains how algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus apply to game development with Unity and GameMaker examples.

Minor corrections

  • 24:42 The hypotenuse is the distance (not angle) from the starting point to the ending point. I was trying to refer to the angled (diagonal) line, but it sounds confusing when I listened to it again.
  • 34:12 16^0 is 1 (not 16), which divides into 10, 10 times which is represented as “A”
  • 1:01:29 Total distance from the source to the destination (not origin)
  • 1:29:38 Imaginary number is the square root of -1 (not square root of 1). Later I said it correctly, but left out negative/minus the first time I said it.

3Tris by Joe

3Tris is a mashup of Tetris and Match-3 rules, where the pieces come down from the top and can be rotated and positioned by using WASD (and spacebar to speed up). The twist that makes the colors important is that the mouse is a 2-block cursor that swaps block positions. The only way to clear blocks is to make match-3 combos by moving the blocks around after they touchdown.

Iro no Hoiiru by Levi

The wheel of color is composed of six colors (aka, orenji, ki, midori, ao, and murasaki). Hold the spin button to adjust the spin power. When the wheel stops, your marker is moved to the next color on the board matching the color where the arrow is pointing. Your marker moves left to right and bottom to top of the board.
